Unattended Children Policy

Parents are responsible for the behavior of their children.  Parents are asked to come into the library with their children, not only for their own safety, but to show respect for other library patrons.  The library enforces its Unattended Children policy.  It has clear rules regarding the ages that children are allowed to be in the library unattended.

  • One of the missions of the library is to provide a variety of services for children of all ages.  The library encourages visits by young children and it is our desire to make these visits both memorable and enjoyable for all children.
  • An “unattended child” is defined as a child under 8 years of age who is not under the immediate control of a parent or other caregiver.  Library staff cannot be expected to assume responsibility for the care of unsupervised children in the library.
  • If a young person is attending a program, it is required that the parent or other caregiver remains in the library throughout the program, unless other arrangements have been made with the library staff.
  • If a caregiver can’t be located within 15 minutes of the end of a program, or if the library is closing and there is an unattended child in the building, the police department will be contacted.
